Alex the Unicorn Part 1

Part 1 of Alex the Unicorn is here to continue on the Too Cool for the Pool Crochet-A-Long hosted by Crochet Wizzard. Hope you have enjoyed making your Ducks and Flamingos! adding Alex the unicorn and their accessory will make your pool party complete.

For the last character of the Pool Party, we will be making Alex the Unicorn! Today, here in Part 1 of the third pattern, we will be making Alex's Head;

in part 2, we will be making the body, and in part 3, we will be making the beach ball.

Alex the Unicorn Crochet Pattern-Part 1

Supplies:

Yarn:

five colors of worsted/Standard 4 weight

I used:

¹ Caron One Pound: Soft Pink- 45 yards

² Caron One Pound: Blue Grotto- 20 yards

³ Caron One Pound: Sun Yellow- 6 yards

⁴ Big Twist: White- 110 yards

⁵ Big Twist: Black- < 1 yard


Optional Yarn:

⁶Gold thread- 1 yards


Crochet Hook:

G (4.00 mm) hook & D (3.00mm) hook


Other Supplies:

Scissors, Tapestry needle, Stitch markers, 2 Eyes (Safety 18mm to 30mm), poly-fil (stuffing)


Optional Supplies:

Beans (or other weighted stuffing), felting kit (if you prefer felted eyes over safety eyes)

The pattern is worked starting from the nose and working into the head rounds, the ears and horn will be sewn on and the main is attached last.

Nose:

Caron One Pound: Soft Pink- 12.5 yards

Big Twist: Black - < 1 yard

G(4.00mm) hook

Begin stuffing head

Leave a tail to sew up hole, cut, weave through flo, pull hole closed, weave in ends

Under Lip:

Caron One Pound: Soft Pink- 3 yards

With pink- ch 7

Note: work around the ch- down one side and back up the other for the 1st Rnd

Lower Lip Rnd 1: sc 5, 3sc, sc 4, 2sc (14)

Rnd 2: sc2tog, sc 4, sc2tog, sc 6 (12)

Rnd 3: sc 12 (12)

Rnd 4: sc 2, sc2tog, sc 8 (11)

Rnd 5: sc 11 (11)

Slst 3, leave long tail, sew under nose, cut and tie

Sew under nose attaching half of round 5 to Rnd 10 of nose and

Half to Rnd 11 of head, keeping lower lip center to nostrils.


Ears: make 2

Caron One Pound: white- 9 yards per ear (18 yards for both)

G(4.00mm) hook

With white- MR

Rnd 1: sc 5 in MR (5)

Rnd 2: sc 5 (5)

Rnd 3: [sc 1, 2sc]x2, sc 1 (7)

Rnd 4: [ sc 2, 2sc]x2, sc 1 (9)

Rnd 5: [2sc, sc 2]x3 (12)

Rnd 6: sc 12 (12)

Rnd 7: [2sc, sc 1]x6 (18)

Rnd 8: hdc 18 (18)

slst 2, leave long tail for sewing on to head, cut and tie

create a fold in the front half of the ear, sew ear above eye, 2 to 3 Rnds back from upper edge of eye.


Horn:

Caron One Pound: yellow – 6 yards

Optional- Gold thread- less than 1 yard

G(4.00mm) hook

With yellow- MR

Rnd 1: sc 3 in MR (3)

Rnd 2: blo- 2sc, blo-sc 2 (4)

Rnd 3: blo-[2sc, sc 1]x2 (6)

Rnd 4: blo-[2sc, sc 1]x3 (9)

Rnd 5: blo-sc 9 (9)

Rnd 6: blo-[2sc, sc 2]x3 (12)

Rnd 7: blo-[2sc, sc 3]x3 (15)

Rnd 8-10: blo- sc 15 (15)

Note: if you want your horn a bit taller you can add a few more Rnds

Leave long tail for sewing to head, cut and tie.

Optional: with D(3.00mm)hook, take gold thread at flo of last stitch and slst in flo around from end of Rnd 9 to start of Rnd 2, cut tie and weave in ends. Add stuffing, sew to middle of head, two Rnds forward from ears


Mane:

Caron One Pound: pink – 5 to 10 yards

Caron One Pound: Blue- - 5 to 10 yards

G(4.00mm) hook- or any hook to latch-hook tie loops of yarn

Cut 3” to 4” pieces of yarn and tie to top of the head

around horn and down the back in the center of head,

alternating colors in desired pattern

Option 1: you can leave them looped

Option 2: you can pull the 4ply strands apart

Option 3: you can brush out the yarn

and trim to the desired shape
